About Eugene Field, the Author

Eugene Field was an American poet. He was known as the “Children’s Poet.” His first published children’s poem was “Christmas Treasures.” He also wrote “The Duel,” “Wynken, Blynken and Nod,” and “The Sugarplum Tree.”

Eugene Field Wrote for newspapers in St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, and Chicago. In Chicago, Eugene Field wrote for the Chicago Daily News. His column was called “Sharps and Flats.” Eugene Field introduced poetry to thousands of people who read the newspaper.

Eugene Field was born in St. Louis on September 3, 1850. He died in Chicago on November 11, 1895. He is buried in the churchyard of the Church of the Holy Comforter in Kenilworth, Illinois. His boyhood home in St. Louis is a museum that has a collection of toys and dolls.
